When are tours offered?
Our museums are open and tours are offered year-round. Please check our guided tours and sites pages for current schedules. In addition to the regular schedule, we offer private tours and special events throughout the year.
Are reservations required?
Advance reservations and payment are required for the Haunted Tour, Saloon Tour, Tombstone Tales Tour, the Washington Mine Tour and our guided hikes. Reservations are not required for the Historic Walking Tour or for gold panning at Lomax Mine. We ask that your arrive 10-15 minutes early for a tour or hike whether you have reservations to not. This allows our guides to check in all guests and begin the tour on time.
How do I reserve a tour?
You can CLICK HERE to purchase tickets online. Or you can call our reservation line at 970-453-9767 x2, or visit the Breckenridge Welcome Center at 203 South Main Street to make a reservation.
Are your sites and tours ADA accessible?
We strive to make our sites and tours as accessible as possible! Please call us at 970-453-9767 x2 if you have a question about accessibility.
- Sites that are fully accessible: Barney Ford Victorian Home, Edwin Carter Discovery Center, Summit Ski Exhibit (first floor only), Welcome Center Museum, Archive Room and the High Line Railroad Park & Museum.
- Sites that are accessible but may require extra effort: William Briggle Home and Alice Milne House (there are uneven surfaces to navigate to get into and around these historic houses).
- Tours that are fully accessible: Historic Walking Tour, Breckenridge Haunted Tour and the Behind Swinging Doors Saloon Tour (BHA staff are not responsible for pushing wheelchairs and we recommend that either the individual in the chair or a fellow guest can maneuver the chair up Washington Avenue from the Welcome Center to the Barney Ford House as that is the steepest incline the tours will travel on).
- Tours that are accessible but may require extra effort: Tombstone Tales at Twilight Tour (the terrain is rough and uneven so may not be navigable with a wheelchair).
- Mine Sites: Our mine sites are not well suited to wheelchairs with rough and uneven terrain and steps into most of the buildings.
Are children allowed on tours?
Yes, children are welcome on our tours and hikes with the exception of the Saloon Tour; guests must be 21+ years of age to join this tour. We offer child-priced tickets for ages 4-12 and children under 4 are always free with the BHA. Please note that unaccompanied minors are not allowed on any of our tours or hikes. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to join tours or hikes (including mine sites and gold panning).
Is the Haunted Tour appropriate for children?
If you are interested in bringing your child(ren) on the Haunted Tour, please be aware that this tour is comprised of eerie stories from the town's past but is not intended to be disturbing/terrifying. You are the best judge if your child(ren) will enjoy a haunted tour.
Can I bring my pet on a tour or hike?
For the safety of our guides and other guests and due to the historical significance of our sites, pets are not allowed on tours or hikes. We do not allow pets on/in our sites, with the exception of service animals.
Can I take pictures at the sites and on the tours and hikes?
As a guest, yes we encourage you to take a souvenir photo. If you are interested in using one our sites for a photo shoot or would like to record film/video of or on a site, please contact Michele, the Office Manager to complete a permit application.
Can I smoke on the tour or at the mines?
Although our walking tours are on public town streets, for the safety and comfort of our guides and other guests we do not permit guests to smoke (including e-cigarettes) while they are on the tour. Smoking is also prohibited in all of our buildings and on all of our sites. The BHA reserved the right to request a guest leave a site or tour if they are smoking.
Do I need to sign anything?
Yes, we require all guests to sign a waiver before they can participate in a tour or hike.
Do I need to bring anything on a tour?
We recommend bringing water as most tours last more than an hour. Please dress appropriately for the weather and remember sunglasses and sunscreen for sunny days and extra warm layers for winter tours.
Do I need to bring anything on a snowshoe hike?
Yes, waterproof shoes - boots are ideal and sneakers are not recommended as your feet will be wet. We also recommend bringing water, a snack, sunglasses or goggles and sunscreen. Please dress appropriately for the weather including extra warm layers on cold days.
What is your cancellation/refund policy for tickets?
Cancellations must be made 24 hours before the scheduled tour to receive a refund. Special events or private tours may require additional cancellation time.
Do you take credit cards?
Yes! We accept Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover. We also accept cash and checks.
How long are your tours?
Plan to spend between 30 minutes and one hour in our museums. Guided tours and hikes range in length from 75 minutes up to four hours.
Am I expected to tip my guide?
Gratuities are never expected, but if you enjoyed your guided tour or hike, tips are always greatly appreciated!
What is the weather policy?
We will cancel a guided tour or hike for the following reasons: 1) if there is thunder and lightning in the area 10 minutes before a tour is scheduled to start, and 2) if the weather forecast predicts the temperature will be below zero degrees Fahrenheit at the start of the tour. In each of these cases, a full refund will be given to guests. Otherwise, tours and hikes are offered rain, snow or shine!

Do you have a gift shop?
Yes, our main gift shop is located at the Breckenridge Welcome Center at 203 South Main Street. We offer a variety of educational, fun and unique gifts for all ages. There is also a selection of books, DVDs and gifts available online at our Heritage Store.
Do you offer refunds on merchandise?
No, with one exception--if the merchandise is defective (for example, a DVD won't play) then we will offer a refund or replacement when the item is returned in excellent condition with a valid receipt.
